Seller: Alec R. Allenson, Inc., Westville, FL, U.S.A.
Hardcover. [4], 388 p.: statistical tables in text; 22 cm. Investigation and report prompted by charges of luxury made in `A new missionary policy for India' by Sir H. S. (Henry Simpson) Lunn and Hugh Price Hughes in the Methodist times for 11 and 18 April 1889. Lunn had gone to India as a medical missionary in 1887 and resigned from the Methodist ministry in 1893, entering politics in the Liberal Party and promoting Christian unity. -- From the preface: `.no suggestion was made or intended to be made as to the amount that should be paid as a Missionary's stipend. It was advised that, whatever that amount might be, it should be calculated, not in gold, but in the silver currence of India. The words of the Sub-committee fully bear out this statement. They are:--:Without expressing any opinion as to the amount of the remuneration of the Indian missionaries, the Sub-committee recommends that the stipends should be paid in the silver currency of India, provided that the rupee is calculated at its par value in respect of any remittances to England out of ministerial income."' -- Concluding resolution: `"That this Committee expresses its great satisfaction that its missionaries in India have been thus so completely exonerated, and records its profound regret that charges so grave and so unsustained should ever have been brought atainst them." Those in favour show hands. The result of the vote was that all with one exception voted in favour of it.' VG orig. maroon cloth. Outer leaves sl. foxed from endpapers.
