Book
Hardcover. Condition: gut. Erste Aufl. D. E. Stevenson starb 1973 in Moffat, Schottland." (Verlagstext) In deutscher Sprache. 350, (2) pages. 8° (135 x 205mm).

Book
Hardcover. Condition: Fair. There is no date of publication in this book and no reference to its edition or printing. The previous owner penciled 12/23/37 off the top edge of the rear cover. No other book of D.E. Stevenson's is mentioned (there is no 'By D.E. Stevenson' page as there is on my copy of Miss Buncle Married where Miss Buncle's Book is referenced). This is Not a first edition, there is no colophon or statement. However, once listed, will be the Only copy of the Farrar & Rinehart American edition for sale on the Internet. Unfortunately, the rear cover of the book is in rough condition (third photo) with significant rubbing. It is the reason for the Fair condition rating. You can see the covers flaws in the photos. There is a small tear at the top edge of the spine, some crinkling at both spine ends, some rubbing at the corners, bit of rub-through at the rear two, a couple of stains and scratches. The page edges look good, the top one has a brown topstain. It's in good condition. The interior of the book has fared much better than the covers. The book is solidly bound. I don't see any binding issues. The pages are very clean. Scrolling through, I haven't noticed any soiling. There is a small bit of soiling or tanning off the top edge of the front inside cover. I'm not seeing any conspicuous creasing, excepting a little one just beneath one top corner. There are no placeholder creases. There is one instance of a tiny sliver of paper at the outer edge of one page being pulled off onto the page before it, obviously far from the print. There is also a thin tear off the bottom edge of that page, also far from the print. Scrolling through, I didn't see any other tears. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. The penciled date and a penciled name on the blank front end paper represent the only writing to be found anywhere. ' Miss Buncle, now on reduced means, writes a book about the village she lives in. It gets published under the nom du plume John Smith', and to her surprise is a publishing sensation, turning her fortunes around. However, not all of the villagers are happy. Miss Buncle has portrayed them as they are, and some take offence, particularly those who are not portrayed in a particularly bad light. ('It's not me, I'm not like that, but it's clearly me and I declare it libel!'). Months are then spent trying to find out who John Smith is and when incorrectly identified, the woman is persecuted, snubbed and her children kidnapped. Meanwhile other more positive outcomes occur as a result of the book--the Colonel and his next door neighbour get married, and the vicar escapes the clutches of a gold digger who thinks he has more money than he does. And Barbara Buncle gets more than she ever imagined.' Referencing Ms. Stevenson's novels, a reviewer from the New York Times Book Review wrote 'Whatever D.E. Stevenson puts her fictional hand to, has certain ineradicable, sure qualities. Humor, lightness of touch, the ability to plot an enthralling story in fascinating surroundings and to create characters that appeal, convincingly, both to head and heart.' Ms. Stevenson's father, David Alan Stevenson, a lighthouse engineer who built twenty six lighthouses in and around Scotland, was a first cousin to Robert Louis Stevenson. D.E. Stevenson's novels were best-sellers, with more than seven million copies printed and translations in multiple languages. Her last book was published in 1971.
