Cloth. Condition: Good Plus. Edward Hawke Locker was responsible for the formation of the Naval Gallery housed in the Painted Hall of Greenwich Hospital, and was active in securing many of the donated pictures. With this work it was his intention to produce a history of the Royal Navy in biographical form, but due to ill health only, this, the first of a planned four volumes was completed. Comprises sixteen biographies, and description of four actions, each with a plate. Included are Blake, Rooke, Benbow, James Cook and Collinwood, actions include the Armada, Ushant and the Nile. Most of the plates have a degree of foxing, mostly light and medium, with one severe. Recently library bound in blue buckram with reinforced hinges, however there are no library stamps. A good working copy, and priced accordingly, of a scarce book.

This copy inscribed by one of the author's sons on the front fly leaf: "To James Glaisher Esqe. As a token of sincere regard from his obliged pupil & friend Henry Algernon Locker 24th June 1843". James Glaisher (1809-1903) was a founder member of the Meterological Society, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1849. Rebound in modern half leather binding with marbled papered boards. Chipped spine title lettering piece from earlier binding laid down on spine. Page dimensions: 298 x 239mm. 23 chapters, each chapter paginated separately. With 24 plates. Some foxing and dampstains to margins of plates, but generally very good, and clean in the printed area. Tissue guards present to all plates. Most plates are portraits, one is of a ship and three are of ships or nautical battle scenes. Twenty engraved plates with tissue guards (complete), sixteen of which are portraits of the commanders including Admiral Byng and Captain Cook and four of which are historic scenes including the defeat of the Spanish Armada and the Battle of the Nile. Each plate has a separately paginated chapter to accompany it. Book Condition: Very Good. Half calf ; original spine laid down over modern leather with patterned paper-covered boards. Five raised bands, gilt stamped titles and decoration, aeg. Leather a little rubbed to extremities but a sound tight copy. Sporadic foxing, heaviest to plate edges; no annotation or inscriptions. Scarce.

Subscriber's copy, ownership inscription of 'Vice Admiral / Sir Graham E. Hamond / 1838', with his armorial bookplate to FEP. The first edition of Greenwich Royal Naval Hospital administrator Edward Hawke Locker's (1777-1849) substantial companion to the art collection of The Naval Gallery. Locker had founded the gallery in 1823 as a charitable institution with the aim of raising funds for the hospital. George IV approved of the scheme and provided numerous works from the Royal Collection which would form the core of the galleries holdings. In 1936 the collection passed to the newly founded National Maritime Museum. Memoirs of celebrated naval commanders provides biographical accounts for several of the most renowned heroes of Britain's maritime history, including the exalted Captain James Cook, each accompanied by an engraved reproduction of the portrait held by the gallery. Sir Graham Eden Hamond (1779-1862), respected naval officer notable for his commands during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Following a distinguished career, including a period serving as Commander-in-Chief, South American Station, Hamond would attain the rank of Admiral of the Fleet. Size: Quarto.
