Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. Presentation by author to Maude Gosling. Photographs throughout, cloth covered boards with one small smudge to front board, near fine. Dj is slightly sunned, and a little bumped to corners and head and foot of spine, very good indeed. Acquired from Maude Lloyd, an admired leading dancer with Ballet Rambert in the 1930s. With her husband, Nigel Gosling a renowned art critic, she later wrote, influential dance books and reviews under the joint pseudonym, 'Alexander Bland'. When Rudolph Nureyev defected in 1961, Margot Fonteyn asked them to befriend him which they gladly did offering him freedom of their house. Gosling edited his autobiography. Nureyev wrote an admiring memoir of him in Observer of the Dance anthologising Goslings reviews, "He and Maude were like my family.". Inscribed by Author(s).

Book First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Published by Knopf, USA. Date: 1987. 1st edition. Original cloth. Dustwrapper. Size: 25.1cm x 29.7cm. Pp. 144. Illustrated throughout with colour and black and white photographs by Eve Arnold. The publication of this work reinforced the status of Arnold as one of Marilyn Monroe's finest photographers. Arnold wrote: 'Over the years I found myself in the privileged position of photographing someone who I had first thought had a gift for the still camera and who turned out had a genius for it,' Arnold wrote. 'I never knew anyone who came close to Marilyn in natural ability to use both photographer and still camera. She was special in this, and for me there has been no one like her before or after. She has remained the measuring rod by which I have - unconsciously - judged other subjects.' Their working relationship lasted from 1955 to 1962 and the two would go on to become good friends: 'Our 'quid pro quo' relationship, based on mutual advantage, developed into a friendship,' Eve wrote. 'The bond between us was photography. She liked my pictures and was canny enough to realise that they were a fresh approach for presenting her - a looser, more intimate look than the posed studio portraits she was used to in Hollywood.' Signed by Eve Arnold beneath the printed 'Marilyn Monroe' on the page before the prologue and additionally inscribed by her on the half-title: 'For Rupert, a friend from the past with great regard, Eve.' 'Rupert' was Rupert Hambro, scion of the banking family who founded J O Hambro Capital Management Limited, former lover of Camilla, the Queen Consort and husband of Robin Hambro, a former Editor of American Vogue and one of the best-dressed women in the world. A typed letter to Rupert Hambro from Eve Arnold is loosely inserted which states: 'I was so happy to see you the other day after - thirty-five years and happy that you pinpointed where and how we met. I remembered you well'. She then adds: 'Images of our soggy trip to photograph at the Grand National keep running around in my mind. It was for a whisky ad - and it was in a downpour and we didn?t even have any of the spirits we were advertising to allay the cold, and you and Carrie were mopping up the couple between takes and I was trying to keep the lens dry. The year was 1964.' Binding nice and tight. Pages and illustrations very nice and clean. A very near fine, bright, clean copy in near fine, very slightly creased, rubbed and spine-faded dustwrapper. Signed copies of this key photographic study are very scarce and this is a fine association copy. In one of his last interviews in 2022, Rupert Hambro revealed that the four people that he would most have liked to invite for dinner were Albert Camus, the Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka-shing, the jeweller Theo Fennell and . Marilyn Monroe. Signed by Author(s).
