La seconde pièce possède sa propre page de titre et son privilège. Les deux pièces appartiennent à la même édition. Reliure en pleine basane d'époque. Dos à nerfs orné. Pièce de titre en maroquin rouge. Coiffe inférieure élimée. Coins inférieurs émoussés. Les Machabées furent représentés pour la première fois en 1721. L'auteur n'ayant pas jugé à propos de se découvrir, la pièce fit grand bruit auprès des critiques, et plusieurs connaisseurs s'imaginèrent qu'au moins les trois premiers actes ne pouvaient être que de feu Racine. Dramaturge, poète et fabuliste, Houdar de la Motte (1672-1731) écrivit même des opéras (L'Europe galante) et des ballets. Il fut un des chefs du parti des Modernes (dans la querelle des Anciens et des Modernes), il fréquenta les salons philosophiques et les cafés littéraires et remplaça Pierre Corneille à l'Académie Française.
