Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition with the rare pictorial dust jacket. Book is clean and tight, lightly foxed with bright orange cloth boards slightly bumped on the corners. Pictorial dust jacket is not price clipped and complete and has on the front cover a contemporary photograph of Robert Service. There is slight edgewear including small chips at the folds, nothing major. Loosely inserted are three verses from different poems by Rupert Brooke, all written in the distinctive handwriting of Robert Service. The written poems are "Pine Trees and the Sky: Evening", "The One Before the Last" and "the Chilterns". All verses seem to refer to a love affair that has come to an end and seem to indicate that the book and the handwritten notes were gifted by Robert Service to someone in whom he had a romantic interest. They are not signed but I have checked other examples of his handwriting with the somewhat unusual letter formations and it seems to match.
