First hardback edition, first printing, inscribed by the author on the title page, "For Dilnaz, best wishes, Zachary Mason, May 19th". The work was first published as a paperback in 2008 by Starcherone Books, an independent publisher in New York, as the 2007 winner of their Prize for Innovative Fiction. The text was significantly revised for this hardback edition, which received wider acclaim. Billed as a new translation of lost manuscript fragments recovered from ancient ruins, this title is a collection of 44 vignettes, each focusing on a specific theme, character, or setting from Homer's original work. Simon Armitage reviewed Mason as "spellbinding. In his versions of these ancient myths Mason twists and jinks. Rarely is it so reassuring to be in the hands of such an unreliable narrator" (jacket blurb). Octavo. Original red boards, spine lettered in silver. With dust jacket. Contents printed in grey and black. Spine ends bumped, occasional relevant pencil annotations to text; jacket with gentle soiling and creasing, unclipped: a near-fine copy in like jacket.
