First Edition
First and only contemporary edition of this apologia for Lytton's much disparaged administration of India, written by his daughter Elizabeth (1867-1942), a salonnière connected to the Souls by her husband Gerald William Balfour, brother of Arthur, and an active supporter of the women's suffrage movement. This is a useful compilation from original documentation, well represented institutionally but uncommon on the market. Robert Bulwer-Lytton (1831-91) had a brief but controversial term as Disraeli's Viceroy, 1876-1880, which encompassed the Delhi Durbar (at which Queen Victoria was proclaimed Empress of India), an assassination attempt, the great famine of 1876-78 in which up to 10 million died, and the second Afghan War of 1878-80. Lady Balfour states her intention as being to give "to the public, for the first time, the true inner history of an administration which has been greatly criticised, yet little understood" (p. viii). Inked ownership inscription of Shirley Tremearne, dated 1902 to the front pastedown. Tremearne (1849-1923) was editor of Capital, colonial India's oldest financial newspaper, covering trade, economic output, industry, infrastructure development, public affairs and current events, subtitled "A Weekly Commercial Paper Devoted to the Interests of Capitalists and Employers of Labour". Octavo. Publisher's greyish olive cloth, spine lettered in gold, blind panel to the front cover. Tissue-guarded photogravure portrait frontispiece with facsimile signature, folding coloured regional map. A little rubbed, corners softened, spine crumpled head and tail, paper label of the University Women's Club at the head of the front cover, their ink stamps to the front free endpaper only, slight play in the inner hinges, but sound, uniform moderate toning throughout, clean tear to the stub of the folding map, remains very good.
