Lloyd printed a sheet of shipping news and distributed it to his customers, who eventually formed the Register Society. "The Society printed the first Register of Ships in 1764, in order to give both underwriters and merchants an idea of the condition of the vessels they insured and chartered. In 1834, the organization was reconstituted as Lloyd's Register of British and Foreign Shipping, and the first Rules for the survey and classification of ships were published." (Lloyd's). The periodical was published annually under this title from I834 to I913/1914, continuing as Lloyd's Register of Shipping from 1914/I915 to the present.
