Book First Edition
Mass Market. Condition: Good. First Printing Stated. 288 Pages. This is the August 1968 First Printing. It is a Signet Book No. Q3572. Joe Allston fled to rural California to for get about his past, about his dead son, about life. Jim Peck, jesus-sandaled hippie, motor biked into Joe's backyard on a blast of kicks, yoga, LSD, and all-out sex. That was the first invasion, but the gates didn't fall until Marian arrived . . . the young woman who bore the greatest gift, the greatest danger, to all who loved her. It comes to a climax in as harrowing a scene as we've seen in recent fiction. Stegner is writing of matters as old as Greek mythology and as contemporary as today's headlines. Stegner has always been able to evoke a sense of violence lying in wait in nature, including human nature. So much strong emotion and intellectual force with such controlled lucidity is very, very rare. A beautiful novel.
