Book First Edition Signed
The scarce FIRST EDITION, inscribed and SIGNED by the author, Hugo A. Rennert, on the front free endpaper. Very good minus. It is inscribed to Charles L. Ayling. Charles Lincoln Ayling was the son of General Augustus Davis Ayling, a Civil War veteran and author of a diary recently published as A Yankee at Arms: The Diary of Lieutenant Augustus D. Ayling, 29th Massachusetts Volunteers (edited by Charles F. Herberger; Voices of the Civil War; May 1999, 320 pp., Illustrations, LC 98-40114 Cloth, ISBN: 1-57233-034-1). Charles L. Ayling '.was a very successful and prosperous businessman: he was the chairman of the board of John Hancock Life Insurance Company, among other business interests, and also a generous philanthropist. His mother, the general's wife, Elizabeth Cornish Ayling, was a Cape Codder, the daughter of a sea captain, and both he and his father spent their summers in Centerville on the Cape. That is why his philanthropy centered there. Cape Cod owes its major hospital and its major airport at Hyannis to Charles Ayling's initiative and endowment. Centerville is indebted to him for its library building, and the Centerville Historical Society owes him for a wing of its museum and a large part of its collection and endowment. It is evident that Charles Ayling appreciated the historical value of his father's diary and therefore presented it, together with his father's personal scrapbooks, letters, and collected Civil War records, artifacts, and mementos, to the Centerville Historical Society.' That Charles L. Ayling would own the first edition of The Life of Lope de Vega, inscribed to him by Hugo A. Rennert, is indicative of his interests in literature, drama and theatre. In fact, these interests can be traced well back in Ayling's family: 'Augustus Ayling was born in Boston on July 28, 1840, the son of William L. and Margaret C. Ayling. Both of his parents were theater people. Shortly after his death on March 11, 1918, a remembrance of his parents appeared in the Boston Herald as follows: 'The last time I saw Mrs. L. Ayling she was acting at the National Theatre. She was the mother of General Augustus D. Ayling, whose death has been recently recorded. He was a Civil War veteran of distinction. For more than 27 years he was Adjutant General of New Hampshire. He was a native of Boston, and he died at Cenreville, Cape Cod, universally respected. 'Meg' Ayling was a bright and lively actress who began her stage career at the old Tremont Theatre. My mother knew her as a naturally talented young girl who was sure to make her mark. Her husband was a sensible, intelligent actor, always popular in Boston. My impression is that 'Meg' Ayling performed here for the last time at the Continental Theatre, though I remember meeting her on the street afterward, when she was apparently unknown to the great majority of playgoers. My final glimpse of her at the National was as the leader of a female guard, for whom she asked three cheers when she was summoned enthusiastically before the curtain.' It is significant that Ayling's parents were sensitive and artistically talented people. In dedicating the Centerville Public Library to his father, Charles Ayling remarked on General Ayling's lifelong interest in Shakespeare.' Red cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering on spine, top edge gilt, octavo, 587 pp., extensive bibliography, index. The frontispiece illustration of de Vega Carpio (by Luis Tristan) is modestly foxed, and there is scattered mild foxing in the text. A few pages have been carelessly opened, and scattered pages remain unopened. The rear gutter is cracked, but the binding reinforcement is intact here, and overall the binding is still tight. Externally, the spine ends are modestly worn, and the spine cloth is finely speckled (consistent with insect damage). Dr. Rennert was a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, and in his Preface, dated May 19, 1903, he writes: 'It is nearly a hundred years since a biography of Lope deVe.
