Book
Hardcover. Condition: New. India in ancient times has encountered many foreign travelers and invaders. Shakas, Kushanas, Greeks, Persians, Huns, and Indo-Romans had conquered parts of India. Many Greek chronicle writers had written about the description of India. However, the Chinese Buddhist monks had a unique experience with India. Several Chinese travelers came to India, most of whom were Buddhist monks. One of them was Hiuen-Tsiang (c. ad 602-664), who visited India during the reign of Harshavardhana. He wrote extensive pieces of literature on Buddhism and India in Chinese and studied under various Buddhist monks in India. This book covers the biography of the Chinese Buddhist monk along with his accounts written by I-Tsing. Divided into five chapters, it covers his nativity at Chenliu, and his parentage, his stay at Kau-Chang. The book covers his interactions with the Turkic tribes at Khotan, experiences in Central Asia, and other parts of Xinjiang province. His epic visit to India has been described in a detailed manner, where he stayed at Kie-jo-kio-she, known as Kannauj, visited places associated with Buddha such as Kapilavastu, Bodh Gaya, etc., and also world famous Nalanda University. The book also covers his interactions and training under various Buddhist monks cum scholars, his visit to Ujjain and Sindh region, and his visit to Bamiyan and other sites in the Hindu Kush region. This book ends with his final years at Kauchang and his demise from the world. About the Author Samuel Beal (1825-1889) was an Oriental scholar and the first English person to translate Chinese sources into the English. He was appointed in 1872 to examine Buddhist Chinese books in India Office Library, London. He became a professor of Chinese Studies at University College, London in 1877. His Chinese Buddhist works on India include translations of travelogues which were composed from the fifth to seventh centuries ad, which are quite popular.

Hardcover. Condition: Very good(+). Popular Edition. Dark green stamped cloth; xlvii, 218 pages 22 cm; bibliographical references. Series: Trübner's oriental series. Xuanzang, approximately 596-664. Yijing, 635-713. Beal, Samuel. I Ching, Buddist Monk. Miuen-Tsiang. Xuanzang, approximately 596-664. Yijing, 635-713. Biography. Historical Works. Translations. "Translation of Da Tang da ci en si Sanzangfashi zhuan Xuanzang [ÉÉ¥ÉÌn.tsâÅ] (Chinese: çå¥; fl. 602 - 664), born Chen Hui / Chen Yi (é ç¦), also known as Hiuen Tsang, was a 7th-century Chinese Buddhist monk, scholar, traveler, and translator. He is known for the epoch-making contributions to Chinese Buddhism, the travelogue of his journey to India in 629-645 CE, his efforts to bring over 657 Indian texts to China, and his translations of some of these texts.Xuanzang was born on 6 April 602 in Chenliu, what is now Kaifeng municipality in Henan province. As a boy, he took to reading religious books, and studying the ideas therein with his father. Like his elder brother, he became a student of Buddhist studies at Jingtu monastery. Xuanzang was ordained as a ÅrÄmaá era (novice monk) at the age of thirteen. Due to the political and social unrest caused by the fall of the Sui dynasty, he went to Chengdu in Sichuan, where he was ordained as a bhiká £u (full monk) at the age of twenty. He later traveled throughout China in search of sacred books of Buddhism. At length, he came to Chang'an, then under the peaceful rule of Emperor Taizong of Tang, where Xuanzang developed the desire to visit India.[2] He knew about Faxian's visit to India and, like him, was concerned about the incomplete and misinterpreted nature of the Buddhist texts that had reached China. He was also concerned about the competing Buddhist theories in variant Chinese translations. He sought original untranslated Sanskrit texts from India to help resolve some of these issues. At age 27, he began his seventeen-year overland journey to India. He defied his kingdom's ban on travel abroad, making his way through central Asian cities such as Khotan to India. He visited, among other places, the famed Nalanda monastery in modern day Bihar, India where he studied with the monk, ÅÄ«labhadra. He departed from India with numerous Sanskrit texts on a caravan of twenty packhorses. His return was welcomed by Emperor Taizong in China, who encouraged him to write a travelogue. This Chinese travelogue Dà Táng XÄ«yù Jì (Great Tang Records on the Western Regions) is a notable source about Xuanzang, and also for scholarship on 7th-century India and Central Asia. His travelogue is a mix of the implausible, the hearsay and a firsthand account. Selections from it are used, and disputed, as a terminus ante quem of 645 CE for events, names and texts he mentions. His text in turn provided the inspiration for the novel Journey to the West written by Wu Cheng'en during the Ming dynasty, around nine centuries after Xuanzang's death."-Wikipedia. Minor external wear; binding tight, leaves clean. Very good(+) to about near fine(-).
