Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Daudet (considered in France to be one of the top French authors of all time), has written a book that occupies the vague landscape between fiction and non-fiction, clothing his personal observations, musings, and even local stories from the South of France in the mantle of fictional ramblings. Some scuffing to front board, slight dulling of gilt on spine, slight shelf-wear to spine. Hinges and text-block good. In excellent shape for a book printed in 1900.

Published by Paris. Bibliothèque-Charpentier, 1924
Seller: Libris Books, Bristol, United Kingdom
Book
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Paris. Bibliothèque-Charpentier. 1924. Edition Definitive. French Text. Fine Binding. Half leather with gilt titles to the spine panel. Attractive dark green marbled endpapers. The paper used has toned but this adds to the charm of the volume. Very slight bowing to the upper board; hardly noticeable. Gilt and red striped ribbon marker. A collection of short stories first published in its entirety in 1869. Some of the stories had been published earlier in newspapers or journals such as Le Figaro and L'Evénement as early as 1865. The stories are all told by the author in the first person, typically addressing a Parisian reader. The author, having relocated his home from Paris, recounts short bucolic tales about his new life in Provence as well as his trips to Corsica and French Algeria. The stories vary from day-to-day events in southern France to Provençal folktales, and often feature professions and faunal references characteristic of Provence. The tales are characterised by pity, tenderness and sadness, alongside gaiety and mockery. A very handsome copy of this French volume in far better condition than would be expected for its age.
Published by Chez Jean Emery, Editions d'Art, Angoulême, 1948
Seller: Capitol Hill Books, ABAA, Washington, DC, U.S.A.
Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Angoulême: Chez Jean Emery, Editions d'Art "L'Heptaméron," 1948. First Thus: Limited Edition of 2000 numbered copies of which this is No. 572. Octavo (22x16x1.5cm); 237pp. Fifteen full-page lithographic illustrations in color, with additional spot-color "ornementation" (orthographe française, chers lecteurs), all by P.-J. Emery. Jacket is in hand-made laid linen paper ("un pur fil de lin blanc à la main"), retaining original glassine. Broché volume bound in sewn gatherings within nude card wrappers. Entirely in French. Glassine is browned on spine with lacuna over spine and publisher's emblem. Front of glassine has triangular closed tear, and folded edges show a few losses. Some edge- and spine-browning to jacket itself, where light forced its way through the glassine. Glassine and jacket have done their tandem job, as the textblock is nearly pristine. Our photos show the volume both without and with the glassine. Daudet's classic 1869 collection of short stories of provincial French life is here illustrated with pastel lithographs, and ornamented with chapter titles, framed initials, and decorative vignettes in carmine red. About P.-J. Emery, the illustrator with a truly charming talent, we have discovered nothing. Our keen French detective sense suggests a connection to the publisher, Jean Emery.
