No. 71 of 600 copies. Frontis w/ tissue grd. Illust. w/ b/w engravings; facsimile docs. w/ tissue grd. & folded-in table. External wear overall. Deckled fore and heel edges. Dampstain marks to sp. and some pp. Cors. bumped and frayed. Letters and papers Relating to the Cruises of Gustavus Conyngham (1744-1819). Conyngham, an Irishman, was supported early on by Ben Franklin. He was a capable sea capain and took numerous British merchant ships as prizes. He wa captured by the British, imprisoned and escaped and evenually reurned to America. He served again at sea during the Quasi War against the French Republic (1798-1800). During the war of 1812 he served on the Philadelphia city council. This volume includes many letters and documents by American, British, and French diplomats that reflect our sea captain's checkered naval career. He was a capable and daring sailor who did much for the American cause, but his service has since been largely forgotten. This is a fine work of scholarship and American naval history.
