(ESTC T57182) (Howes, 43) (Sabin 26436). Joseph Galloway (1731-1803) was a distinguished American colonial legislator, attorney, and loyalist. Originally an ally of Franklin, he served as moderate delegate to the First Continental Congress from Pennsylvania. When it became clear there was no middle ground between colonists' demands for liberty and British insistence on maintaining total sovereignty, he joined the royalist cause. As part of Howes' army, he participated in the British capture of Philadelphia and became Superintendent of Police of the city. After American forces won the city back in 1778, he fled to England. In exile, he was convicted of high treason and all his property was confiscated. (Wikipedia) This pamphlet was "written to demonstrate the shameful misconduct of the English generals in the American war" (Sabin).

Corners are sharp and not bumped. Binding is tight. A Very Good copy. Fascinating account of a British-American Loyalist, namely, a collection of three reprinted letters by Joseph Galloway. In these letters, he writes about the American Revolutionary War in the "Middle Colonies." Titles of the letters are as follows: "On the Strength and Practicability of the Middle Colonies in respect to Military Operations," "On the Disposition of the People in general, of the revolted Colonies," and "On the Conduct of the War in the Colonies of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania." Also included is a three-part Appendix; titles of the parts are as follows: "Extracts of the Instructions to the Representatives of the different Colonies in Congress, September 1774," "A View of the British and Rebel Force operating in the Middle Colonies in the Years 1776, 1777, and 1778," and "A Plan of the Operations of the British and Rebel Armies in the Campaign of 1777, with a Plan of Mud Island Fort and its Environs" (this third part is the map in the front; title differs slightly, but Mud Island Fort is shown on the map). In his letters, Galloway generally expresses ardent support for the British Empire and loyalty of the American colonists to Britain. He defends Britain in its taxation of the colonies including the Stamp Act and Tea Act. He also reports on military operations of both the British and Continental Armies. For example, Galloway describes his analyses of specific campaigns for both the British and Americans, the terrain and natural environment as related to military movements and operations, and his opinions of both armies' performances. Joseph Galloway (1731-1803) was an American lawyer and politician. He was an American Loyalist and figured greatly during the period of the American Revolutionary War. At the age of 25, he was elected to the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly. He was a friend of Benjamin Franklin. Galloway led the Pennsylvania delegation in the first Continental Congress in 1774 where he proposed a Plan of Union between the colonists and Britain, but this plan was rejected. He was vehemently opposed to American independence and supported loyalty to Britain. As the American Revolutionary War loomed, Galloway became increasingly disenchanted with the view of American colonists and resigned from the Assembly. Galloway rejected the Declaration of Independence and went to New York to regroup with the British soon after the Declaration was signed. He became an advisor to General William Howe, the commander-in-chief of British forces in North America, and joined him on his Philadelphia campaign (1777-1778) which he was later critical of. Galloway helped in organizing Loyalists, recruiting spies, and planning attacks on the Continental Army. In 1778, Galloway fled to Britain with his daughter, Elizabeth, after the British retreated from Philadelphia and remained there for the rest of his life. The Pennsylvania Assembly convicted Galloway of high treason and confiscated his properties including Trevose Manor (now known as Growden Mansion) near Philadelphia. His wife, Grace Growden, stayed behind in the hopes of reclaiming the Manor, but she was deemed guilty by association and evicted. Galloway was never reunited with his wife, but Elizabeth was eventually able to reclaim Trevose Manor through her mother's will.

First Edition
Very scarce, the third edition published only one year after the first and to coincide with the publication of Galloway's rebuttal to Howe's response to the first edition. 8vo, in later printed wrappers designed as the original, thread bound. viii, 101, 1 pp. with half-title but without the map. Extremely well preserved, only the lightest of mellowing. SCARCE BRITISH PUBLICATION ON THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION. Galloway had served as delegate to the First Continental Congress from Pennsylvania. For much of his career in Pennsylvanian politics he was a close ally of Benjamin Franklin but when his proposed plan to avert independence failed he became a Loyalist. In the winter of 1777, Galloway joined the British General Howe and accompanied him on his capture of Philadelphia. During the British occupation, he was appointed Superintendent of Police, and headed the civil government, a position he used to aggressively organized the Loyalists in the city. He was dismayed when Howe chose not to push after the colonial army and attack them at their weakened encampment at Valley Forge, and even more so when Howe decided to abandon Philadelphia in 1778 following France's entry into the war. When the British army withdrew to New York, he went with them back to England. Though Galloway had a reputation as a highly efficient administrator, his repeated interference in military affairs made him unpopular. These letters were published to influence the Parliamental investigation in Howe's actions. Galloway very publicly makes charges of incompetence and negligence and argues that with better tactics Washington should have been defeated. Howe's response, "Some Observations Upon a Pamphlet, Entitled, Letters to a Nobleman" followed quickly. In time Parliament would side with Howe and he was acquitted of any blame.
