Book
Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. 2003 Revised Edition. 296 Pages Indexed. This Revised Edition was published in 2003. There is a Preface to the Revised Edition. Many people have heard of Abelard and Heloise as a pair of lovers as famous as Dante and Beatrice or Romeo and Juliet and most know that their story is told in the letters they exchanged. Abelard is a key figure, one of the most original minds of that period and that the medieval university of Paris arose out of his fame as a teacher. Heloise too was the widely respected abbess of a famous convent and its daughter foundations. The letters are numbered 1 thru 8 and Letter 1 is Abelard to a friend with The Story of his Misfortunes. Letters 2 thru 8 alternate each writing four Letters. Then there are Letters of Peter The Venerable and Heloise. The book closes with Two Hymns by Abelard. Included are Maps of France and Paris of the time and Notes. It is very surprising that the Letters of Abelard and Heloise have not sooner appeared in English, since it is generally allowed, by all who have seen them in other languages, that they are written with the greatest passion of any in this kind which are extant. And it is certain that the Letters from a Nun to a Cavalier, which have so long been known and admired among us, are in all respects inferior to them. Whatever those were, these are known to be genuine Pieces occasioned by an amour which had very extraordinary consequences, and made a great noise at the time when it happened, being between two of the most distinguished Persons of that age. There are few firm dates in the lives of Abelard and Heloise because they give no dates for any events in their own writings but they run from 1073 when Pope Gregory VII aimed to restore ecclesiastical authority and make the clergy celibate to 1164 when Heloise died.
