Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. 256 pp., with letter signed by John D. MacDonald. A three-paragraph letter from John D. MacDonald (1916-1986) to Miriam Allen DeFord (1888-1975), signed by MacDonald, accompanied by the first edition of the book discussed in the letter. The letter was sent by MacDonald to deFord to thank her for her note to him about this volume (a collection of mystery stories by 14 female mystery writers), and he states "I am glad I had one of yours to include" - deFord's story, "To Be Found and Read" is included in the anthology. He goes on to talk about the challenges of ordering the various stories, and at one point says "I understated the problems of corresponding with the eight(crossed out letter)y gals. The professionals, as you would suspect, caused no problems whatsoever. But we have some amateur members, believe me, who should be netted and placed in little padded rooms." ___DESCRIPTION: The letter is a standard 8.5" by 11", is dated December 2, 1959; it is on MacDonald's personal stationary with his name printed at the top and his address in Sarasota, Florida at the bottom, and is addressed to deFord at the Ambassador Hotel, San Francisco, where she resided for many years. The book has a pictorial cover (a long-tressed, mostly undressed young lady, illustration by Robert McGinnis), Dell First Edition with the code "B141" beneath, price of $0.35 printed at the upper right, the stories and authors listed on the back. Standard paperback size, 256 pages. ___CONDITION: The letter is in near fine condition; there are the original creases where it was folded in thirds to be posted, and another crease running vertically down the middle; other than that it is in fine condition with no edgewear or markings. The volume is in very good condition for a soft-cover book; there are creases near the spine on both the front and back wrappers, a crease where the upper back corner was bent back, and some very light overall edgewear, mostly to the head and tail of the spine; internally, other than the paper toning with age, it is fine with no prior owner markings. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply, please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
