Profusely illustrated with black-and-white photographs plus an extra rear approximately 29 page section of unpaginated black-and-white photographs. "Many middle-aged people have fond childhood memories of spending Saturday afternoons watching zany Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy comedies. It was the children of the late 1920s and early 1930s who discovered Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. Post World War II children became familiar with the comedy team when Laurel and Hardy films were shown on television. They, too, loved them. Today, Laurel and Hardy are recognized as masters of the comedic art, Ironically, in their prime, Laurel and Hardy were ignored by the critics. Hal Roach, producer of most of their films, was asked about the revived interest in Laurel and Hardy: "It's because there's a lack of their kind of comedy. People appreciate them more now because they haven't got any competition. Nobody's doing what they did. It seems to me that .people have been laughing at things that aren't funny just because they're dying to laugh." One critic, in commenting on Laurel and Hardy's popularity with children, stated: "The older folk often expressed the opinion that they were silly and childish. The youngsters knew better; they weren't childish, they were grown men reacting to the frustrating situations of life with the innocence, trust, occasional cruelty, but perennial optimism of children. Kids never want to grow up. They are reassured and happy when they find adults who have the ability to remain children." World statesmen including Winston Churchill and Josef Stalin found their antics relaxing, and held private screenings of the team's films during World War II. Presented here, in this volume, are the individual biographies of Laurel and Hardy, and their story as a team. The Laurel and Hardy Scrapbook is a tribute to two men whose comedic art has endured." - excerpt from the Introduction by Jack Scagnetti.

Quarto; hardcover, with gilt spine-titling; 131pp., with 29pp. of monochrome photographic plates and many illustrations likewise. Minor wear; text block edges toned and spotted. Very good. Laid in a publicity photograph of the duo and a post card of Laurel with a still from The Bohemian Girl. Postage quoted is for a standard format octavo book. Final charges may vary depending on size and weight. The plot was always the same: Laurel and Hardy were two nice people, who would never accomplish anything because they were both so dumb. But they were unaware that they were dumb. It was this endearing naivete - this lack of awareness, more than their stupidity that attracted fans and made them stars. The simplicity of their slapstick gags, and the dignity and good taste which they always maintained, disarmed audiences world wide. The situations in which they became involved reminded viewers of their own lives. They laughed at Laurel and Hardy, but they were also laughing at themselves. Today Laurel and Hardy are recognized as masters of the comedic art. Ironically, in their prime, they were largely ignored by the critics. They were not considered to be in the same league as the great artists of the day who included Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd and the Marx Brothers. And yet today decades after the creation of their last regular series of comedy films, film critics agree that the twenties and thirties would not have been the same without the madcap antics of Laurel and Hardy. They all now agree that the duo made a contribution to screen comedy that was both important and unique.
