First Edition
Limited edition, number 180 of 1,000 copies. Königsmark, the tragic story of Prince Christopher, Count Königsmark, was first published by A. E. W. Mason in 1938. In 1940 the author commissioned Whistler to produce a set of drawings for the story, providing an advance of £100 pounds, which Whistler finished in the summer of 1941. Mason did not intend to publish the drawings, but instead to have them bound up with his manuscript. In 1952, following the death of both Mason and Whistler, Whistler's brother Laurence published the drawings in the present volume, with an introductory essay. The original drawings were bequeathed to the Tate, where they remain today. Folio. Original orange cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt. With 10 tipped-in colour plates, additional tipped-in facsimile letter. Ownership signature to front free endpaper. Spine a little sunned, rear cover with 2 creases, a few minor marks to cloth. A very good copy.
