Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. P/B 200 pages, condition is very good. INTRODUCTION - Bid farewell to Scotland, and cross to Fife.' This historic proverb seems to encapsulate the relative isolation of the Kingdom from the rest of Scotland, largely the consequence of its physical restraints. This firth- and sea-girt peninsula, with its land-neck guarded by hills, forests and bogs, certainly discouraged indiscriminate pillagers and colonisers. The Romans seem to have avoided Fife, coastal raids by the Danes and the Norsemen were sporadic, and punitive strikes by the English (despite unforgivable damage by Cromwell's men to some of the buildings) were rare. The Kingdom was therefore spared many of the ravages endured by the rest of Central Scotland, and thus was perhaps more able to retain its concentrated essence of Scottish architecture. The 'folk of Fife' (in Sir Walter Scott's terminology) inherited a strong sense of identity, possibly indeed from the time when it was a regional kingdom of the Pictish confederation. That sense of identity bred a fierce spirit of independence which ensured that Fife, alone of a" the counties in Scotland, kept its ancient boundaries discrete and intact as a region, when ah the others were re-organised and amalgamated into the massive and flavourless fiefdoms that they are today. Yet the Firths of Forth and Tay were hardly just barriers, waiting to be bridged in the 19th and 20th centuries. They were busy waterways, crossed by kings and bishops, pilgrims and merchants. For the principal route north and east to Arbroath, Aberdeen, Banff and Moray iiegan with a crossing from Edinburgh to Burntisland, and around the coast of St Andrews and thence north to Tayport. Many stayed, for Fife was, as it remains, a place to go to rather than to pass through. It was a cockpit of Scots history. St Andrews, one of its greatest towns, and oldest university, occupied its chilly North Sea clifftop. For centuries its primates were amongst Scotland's most powerful statesmen. Royal palaces of immense splendour were instructed at Falkland and at Dunfermline, and developed in importance during the unfolding history of the six Jacobean kings. Fife's early membership of a European and Nordic Economic Community was recognised by the kings, with 15 out its 18 Royal Burghs being ports - many founded by James VI specifically to encourage Baltic trade. From these thriving ports dotted along its 115 mile coastline, ships plied back and forth to France, to the Baltic.
