The hospital was founded in 1903 as the King Edward VII Sanatorium, a specialist institution for the treatment of tuberculosis. The design reflected the latest clinical ideas, which prescribed rest, relaxation, fresh air and light. It was also a brilliant essay in Arts & Crafts architecture by H Percy Adams, assisted by the young Charles Holden, later to do such good work for Frank Pick at London Underground. The building was south-facing, with two long wings canted slightly in towards a central block with two bay windows and six stately little gazebos. Materials were traditional - brick, pantile, sandstone, wrought iron - and beautifully detailed. Plain gable-ends in the Voysey style gave the façade a gentle, ponderous rhythm. In its day the King Edwards VII Hospital in Midhurst, Sussex was unique, its associations with Royalty, the reigning monarch was always the President. Progressive enough in its way, the hospital - affectionately dubbed the "San" - was never going to be entirely egalitarian. It stayed private at the inception of the NHS in 1946. There was a separate entrance for "well-to-do patients", and some of the rooms had servants' quarters next door. As the treatment of TB evolved and the rest cure was less in demand, Midhurst began to develop other areas of expertise: cancer care, cardiology, facial reconstruction. NHS reforms allowed it to accept outsourced NHS patients. But the boot was on the neck. The hospital has struggled to be competitive for years. It finally went into provisional liquidation in 2002, with the high cost and poor efficiency of the hospital buildings cited by management as a major factor. It has now been sympatheticall converted as a residential estate, with the wards converted into flats costing as much as £1.5million. Ref W3.
