Mario (1832-1906) was active in women's rights, abolition, and social reform in England, and served as a courier between England and the Italian underground during the fight for Italian unification. She was courted by Alberto Mario while they were both in prison in Genoa. She became the Italian correspondent for "The Nation" during the last 40 years of her life.
