Hardback in quarter bound cloth and card, gilt titles, clean copy, previous owner's label on front endpaper, and a signature in ink on top of the page, some shelfwear, otherwise in Very Good condition, dustwrapper has some shelfwear, marking and small nicks, otherwise also in Very Good condition, in a clear protective wrapper. First edition, pp274, frontispiece picture of James Francis Edward Stewart Chevalier de St George, b&w illustrations, pull-out map of the invasion of England, 1715, index. Charles Sanford Terry (1864?1936) was a distinguished historian and music scholar who wrote important works on Scottish history and J. S. Bach. In this book, which was first published in 1922, Terry joins together a variety of eighteenth-century sources to construct a narrative of the Jacobite movement during the attempted invasion of 1708 and the Risings of 1715 and 1719. First-hand accounts are presented with minimal editorial interference, allowing those who were involved in the fighting to 'tell its incidents in their own way'. A bibliography, table of notable people, textual notes and illustrative figures are also included. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in the Jacobites and eighteenth-century British history.
