Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Printed in the U.S.A. First edition, early printing. [D-M on the copyright page: i.e., April, 1962.] List of Books by Huxley; [xii], 335 [2] pages. The original binding---black cloth spine over salmon boards---is strong, with square corners; however, there are four small spots on the rear cover, and the gilt decoration on the spine is rubbed, though the lettering remains clear. The interior is almost completely bright and clean---despite some dust-spotting on the top-edge---except for a small errant spot on page one and a larger one on the rear endpaper, affecting the fore-edge of several pages. Three leaves are bumped at the upper corner. The original dust-jacket is unclipped ($5.00) with several tears and some rubbing. [Please see my five images of the actual book.] "There are drugs on this island that affect the powers of perception. But heightened consciousness---as opposed to contented stupor---is the end in view, and a far cry from the brave new world's cheer-up gram is the Palinese vision-releasing mushroom. When an agent of conspirators intent to take over the island's oil reserves is shipwrecked, his experiences among the people revolutionize all his values and---to his amazement---give him the hope. The novel will fascinate Mr. Huxley's large audience."---gleaned from the flaps. As with every book from my father's collection, tipped-in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage. All books are wrapped with special care and are shipped promptly with tracking; international sales sent via global priority, also with tracking.

It was the author's final work before his death in 1963. It is the account of Will Farnaby, a cynical journalist who is shipwrecked on the fictional island of Pala. Island is Huxley's utopian counterpart to his most famous work, the 1932 dystopian novel Brave New World. Island explores many of the themes and ideas that interested the author in the post-World War II decades and were the subject of many of his nonfiction books of essays, including Brave New World Revisited, Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, The Doors of Perception, and The Perennial Philosophy. Some of these themes and ideas include overpopulation, ecology, modernity, democracy, mysticism, entheogens, and somatotypes. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 335 pages.
