Decorative Cloth. Condition: Good. Members Edition. Hardback. Foxing to end inside covers and edge. Wear and tear to cloth of spine. Decorative cloth with green spine and gilt lettering. With an Introduction by Alan Pryce-Jones. Engravings by Van Rossem. There are few novels in the English language with a history more curious that that of Incognita. That it should exist at all is odd: that it should have met with enought success to require at least four editions during Congreve's lifetime may be thought reasonable; but that it should have relpased into such obscurity that until Mr. Brett-Smith's edition of 1922, a wholly corrupt text of 1732 was generally treated as authorititive, seems quite inexplicable, in spite of the chilly comments made upon it from time to time by critics as varied as Johnson, Macaulay and Leslie Stephen. Engravings. 71 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.).
