Condition: Gut. 215 p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Altersbedingt leicht vergilbt, sonst guter Zustand / Slightly yellowed due to age, otherwise in good condition. - When and for what reasons history ceased to be considered literature and began to be treated scientifically is the much-debated subject of this inquiry into the origins of modern historical thought. Huppert dispels the notion that modern historical-mindedness and modern techniques of historical erudition were belated by-products of the Scientific Revolution, and convincingly argues that the "idea of perfect history" originated with a circle of French humanists and jurists active in the sixteenth century. The author explores in depth the researches of chief theorists of this "New History"Pasquier, Bodin, Le Roy, Vignier, and La Popeliniere, among otherswhose primary aims included: (1) emancipation from traditional Christian ideas on the meaning and pat- tern of human history; (2) reliance on original sources only; and (3) broadening of historical inquiry to include economic, social, and cultural history. He shows that in the historical works of these men erudition was allied with philosophy in a classic combination which was to serve as the source of later and better known manifestations of the historical spirit. In his discussion of Estienne Pasquier's Recherches de la France, first published in 1560, Huppert points out that Pasquier employed for the first time the historical method long utilized by jurists and philologists, and that he paid only lip service to "divine providence" and "Fortuna" as factors in historical causation. His critics considered Pasquier to be a "monster of impertinence" because of his constant questioning of authorities, and they even came to equate historical criticism with "libertinism." Athough the researches of these sixteenth-century scholars were often rejected by later generations of historians, the author demonstrates their long-term importance and places the French historical movement in the general context of the growth of historical science.
