Jacket Design by S. Neil Fujita (illustrator). First Edition. First Edition of McPherson's first book, a highly regarded collection of stories. The book sprung from a burgeoning relationship with the Atlantic Monthly, who published the story "Gold Coast" prior to this collection. He was quickly made editor, and Hue and Cry came out under Atlantic's imprint on LBC. Through this he developed a relationship with Ralph Ellison, who found the writer a breath of fresh air against his estimation of the current climate of black writing. As he states in his back jacket praise for the book, "McPherson's stories are in themselves a hue and cry against the dead, publicity-sustained writing which has come increasingly to stand for what is called 'black writing.'" Very Good, bottom corners and perimeters of spine pushed, boards lightly scuffed, stain towards crown of spine, some soiling to text block, else sound and clean. Good unclipped jacket showing some edgewear, soiling, rubbing. Open diagonal tear to crown of spine, culminating 1.5" down and removing the "E" from HUE in the lettering, all other material present. Hardcover octavo, quarter red cloth with gilt stamped lettering to spine over mustard boards, 275 pp.
