Hardcover. Condition: Acceptable. Circa 1680-1689; this bible belonged to early Hollywood Silent Film Producer and Director, J. Stuart Blackton, known as the "Father of American Animation"; Blackton's name is written on a detached front flyleaf; there is also an inscription of another, earlier owner, which reads: "My Lady Anne Hollis gave me this booke upon the 17th of April 1703, Grace Clar[e]"; this is a ca. 1680 copy of the Old Testament of the King James Bible; Old Testament ONLY, ending with the book of Malachi; this 8vo imprint was rarely bound in 2 separate volumes, as it obviously was here; the title page is trimmed and mounted and may not belong to this edition, though it most likely does; many editions of this imprint were published from 1680-1689; as far as I can tell, they all included the entire bible, so it is possible that this was rebound in 2 volumes, the 2nd of which was lost at some point in the subsequent 3+ centuries; Bible is FAIR to GOOD- in blind-tooled brown full-leather; rai.

Contemporary blind-tooled reversed calf, later rebacked and recornered, later black morocco lettering-piece. Boards heavily rubbed and marked. The definitive Anglican text of the Reformation. 'The Authorized Version of the English Bible, first printed in 1611.is the most widely-published text in the English language. During many generations, large portions of it were known by heart by people on both sides of the Atlantic. With Shakespeare, its exact contemporary, the Authorized Version has contributed countless quotations and expressions which have slipped, hardly noticed, into English language and idiom. The book was always printed according to a very precise formula. The lengthy wording of the title-page was unvarying. Every Bible opened with the standard preface to James I, 'To the Most High and Mighty Prince James.', beginning 'Great and manifold were the blessings.' The text of the Bible was arranged in strict convention. It was generally laid out in two columns, with separate numbered verses. Each chapter opened with a short summary of its content. There were no interpretative notes, but there were brief references in the margins to parallel passages or variant readings. 246-249pp, HAMEL, Christopher De. The Book. A History of the Bible. A handsomely printed Georgian Bible in a fine period binding, with an interesting contemporary manuscript note; from the library of the British politician Sir Edward Winnington, 2nd Baronet of Stanford Court (1749-1805), with his armorial bookplates. The first volume is annotated in manuscript on an initial blank, very likely in Winnington's hand, copying a note that was originally "written by Sir William Jones in his Bible". An esteemed philologist and orientalist, Jones (1746-1794) was a contemporary of Winnington, and both studied at Oxford at around the same time. Jones is best known for his scholarly contributions on the relationship between European and Indo-Aryan languages; as with many other British imperial researches, he was concerned with the implications of Hindu literature for the European culture, including religion, and his essays contributed to the development of biblical criticism. The note that Jones wrote on his Bible, here copied, started to appear in journals and publications soon after his death. It is a paean to the Bible, which "contains more true sublimity, more exquisite beauty, more pure morality, more important history, and finer strains both of poetry and eloquence, than can be collected from all other books, in whatever age or language they may have been composed. The two parts of which the scriptures consist are connected by a chain of compositions which bear no resemblance, in form or style, to any that can be produced from the stores of Grecian, Persian, or even Arabian learning. The antiquity of those compositions no man doubts; and the unstrained application of them to events long subsequent to their publication, is a solid ground of belief that they are genuine predictions, and consequently inspired". Herbert 1188. Two volumes (272 x 216 mm). Contemporary red morocco, spines with gilt raised bands, compartments richly tooled in gilt, green morocco labels, elaborate dentelle border to covers, board edges and turn-ins tooled in gilt, marbled endpapers, edges gilt, green silk bookmarker in vol. II. Vol. I with engraved frontispiece by Grignion after Hayman; text printed in double columns. Spines uniformly faded, touch of wear to one corner, couple of tiny wormholes at foot of spines, a few light scuffs to leather, negligible foxing to title page of vol. II, contents otherwise notably crisp and clean. A most attractive copy copy, handsomely bound.

An imposing early Georgian lectern bible, together with the Prayer Book, both preserved in matching contemporary reversed calf bindings, and unusual thus. Baskett monopolized English bible production for decades, with his folio editions the grandest and most imposing, designed for use in churches. His great bible of 1717 was a truly impressive edition, of which Harry Carter, the historian of Oxford printing, writes "only Baskerville's Bible (Cambridge, 1763) is its equal among English Bibles for beauty of type, impression, and paper" (The History of the Oxford University Press, 1975, I, p. 171). ESTC T90374 & T216675; Bible: Darlow & Moule, 1042. Two works, folio (Bible: 464 x 288 mm; Prayer Book: 400 x 246). Contemporary panelled reversed calf. Engraved frontispiece in Prayer Book. Divisional title for New Testament with verso recording births and deaths in the Holgate Family in Whixley from 1809 to 1913. Both with minor repair at foot. Bible: front free endpaper affixed to pastedown, light peripheral wear, staining to fore margin, some worming in gutter of sigs. B and C in the New Testament (not affecting text). Prayer Book: slight rubbing and minor wormholes at head of spine. Handsome copies.
