Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The Booker Prize-winning novel from 'the Chekhov of suburbia', Stanley Middleton. Rejacketed and republished for the anniversary of its 1974 win.THE BOOKER PRIZE-WINNING NOVEL2019 marked the centenary of Stanley Middleton's birth. Holiday, winner of the 1974 Booker Prize, remains the most celebrated and popular novel from 'the Chekhov of suburbia'.Edwin Fisher has fled to a seaside resort of his childhood past to try to come to terms with the death of his baby son and the collapse of his marriage to Meg. On this strange and lonely holiday, as he seeks to understand what went wrong, Edwin must find somea way to think about what he has been and decide upon where he can go next.______________________________________'At first glance, or even at second, Stanley Middleton's world is easily recognizable. The excellence of art, for Middleton, is an exact vision of real things as they are. And because he is himself so exact an observer, his world at third glance can seem strange and disturbing or newly and brilliantly lit with colour.' A.S. Byatt'We need Stanley Middleton to remind us what the novel is about. Holiday is vintage Middleton. One has to look at nineteenth-century writing for comparable storytelling.' Sunday Times THE BOOKER PRIZE-WINNING NOVEL2019 marked the centenary of Stanley Middleton's birth. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Publisher's blue boards with silver lettering to the spine. Mild foxing to the top edge, fore-edge and the front free end-paper otherwise a near fine copy in a VG+ D/W with minor rubbing to the tip and tail of the spine and to the extremities and with foxing to the edge of the rear flap. Signed by the Author on the title page: "With every good wish./ Stanley Middleton/ 1974". Provenance: This book was signed for a cub reporter from the Nottingham Evening Post who interviewed the Author as follows: "Stanley Middleton gave me this copy of Holiday on the day in 1974 when his Booker Prize win was announced. I was working as a reporter on the Nottingham Evening Post and was sent out to interview him at his home in Sherwood. It was one of my first assignments as a member of the head office staff and it put me in the embarrassing position of having to tell him that I hadn t read any of his books and hadn t heard of him before that morning. So the gift of the book and the inscription he wrote in it in front of me were a generous encouragement to better researched journalism. We may have talked over tea and biscuits, possibly about the routine of a writer s life. I think his patience with me was a measure of his modesty and of that genuine interest in young people good schoolteachers share". Photographs/scans available upon request. Signed by Author.
