Trotz seiner Unschuld, wird Stanley rasch in die Routine von Camp Green Lake eingebunden: vor Sonnenaufgang aufstehen, um ein Loch von fünf Fuß Durchmesser und fünf Fuß Tiefe zu graben; lernen, wie man mit der Horde von Jungs in Gruppe D zurechtkommt, die nach einem Herr-der-Fliegen-Muster gestrickt zu sein scheinen; und sich vor der Wärterin fürchten, die sich ihre Fingernägel mit Klapperschlangengift lackiert.
