London: J. Johnson, 1772. 4to. Orig. full speckled calf (later rebacked with raised bands and morocco titling-labels. Corners repaired). With fold. frontispiece table in Vol. I, and 23 (ex 24) mostly engrv. fold. plates (lacking Plate IV). Interior is generally clean; some shadowing on title-pages, and occasional minor foxing, otherwise fine. 1st edition. Without list of subscribers. NOTE: Joseph Priestly (1733-1804) English natural philosopher, chemist and theologian. He is best known for his discovery of oxygen. According to the DSB the present work on vision, light and colours "remained the only English work on the history of optics for a hundred and fifty years and the only one in any language for over fifty".

2 volumes, 4to, pp. v, (viii), xvi, 422; 1 leaf, pp. 423?812, (12), folding engraved biographical chart (frontispiece) and 24 stilted plates. Contemporary tree calf, nicely rebacked, edges slightly darkened. Last two leaves of subscribers misbound before the first two, a little foxing and offsetting (two gatherings in vol. 2 more spotted), but an excellent set. Signature of Stephen Freeman, 1799, in each volume. FIRST EDITION. The first history of theories of vision, light, and colour, containing a thorough review of virtually all the significant work in the field. It also contains substantial chapters on optical instruments (the telescope, microscope, etc.). ?Although the History of Optics contains much useful information, it was considerably less successful than the History of Electricity. Until recently optics had not attracted substantial historical interest, and although Priestley?s History of Optics had but one English edition and a translation into German, it remained the only English work on the subject for a hundred and fifty years and the only one in any language for over fifty? (DSB). Parkinson, Breakthroughs, 1772. Crook S/479 (with incorrect plate count). This copy has an additional list of 28 subscribers on the verso of the errata leaf, including several from Jamaica.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. The History and Present State of Discoveries Relating to Vision, Light, and Colours. London: Printed for J. Johnson, 1772. First edition, quarto, v, [9], xvi, 812, [12]p; folding engraved chart bound opposite title page; illustrated with 24 folding engraved plates; bound in nicely rebacked modern full sheepskin, neatly done in period style; minor offsetting in a few plates as usual but internally clean and superb. 10 x 8 in. Crook S/479; ESTC T36343. Joseph Priestley, a household name for his famous discovery of oxygen gas, was a notable English scientist. This comprehensive account of the discoveries and properties of light, colour and vision provides an elaborate history of Optics from the early days, through Newton's contributions and offers a contemporary analyses and discussion, including Priestley's own theories and experiments. Just like his History of Electricity (1767), this account was highly popular in the scientific community as "the only English work on the subject for 150 years and the only one in any language for over 50".
