References: Hugo, "The Bewick Collector," #99ff; Wood, p. 236; Roscoe 15a and 17b. Bewick refined and popularized the technique of wood-engraving, that is, using metal-engaving tools to cut hard boxwood across the grain, permitting more detail and durability that traditional methods of wood cuts could achieve. The durability of the wood-engraved blocks meant they could be integrated with the type, resulting in fine in-text illustrations and vignettes. Bewick's History of British Birds is considered the forerunner of all modern field guides. The early editions were printed in various formats. In the first press run of Land Birds (volume 1), only 24 copies were pulled in Imperial Octavo format; our copy is almost certainly from the second press run, in which 207 such copies were printed. Roscoe notes that "Bewick, who was not a bibliographer, would have . regarded this edition as no more than an additional printing of the first" (p. 56). Our Water Birds (volume 2) is a first run in Royal Octavo. First edition of Water Birds on Royal 8vo; Second printing of Land Birds on Imperial 8vo.

BEWICK, Thomas [and BEILBY, Ralph]. History of British Birds. The Figures Engraved on Wood by T. Bewick. Newcastle: Printed by Edward Walker, for T. Bewick, 1809. 1st combined ed. 327,[1];360pp. Later full brown polished calf, triple ruled in gilt, raised spine bands, compartments elaborate gilt, red morocco spine label, marbled endpapers, gilt-chamfered edges, A.e.g. Faint scattered foxing, else very good or better. Roscoe 20. This combined edition of the first birding field guide is considered to have the finest impressions of Bewick's engravings. Bewick (1753-1828), an engraver who trained and worked in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, provides an accurate illustration of each species, from life if possible, or from skins. The bird is described, with its distribution and behavior, often with extensive quotations from printed sources or correspondents. The History has had many fans since its first printing in 1797, not only for the fine engravings of the birds but also the "tail pieces," humorous drawings placed to fill gaps in the text, often with implicit moral instruction. However, it is perhaps best known to literature devotees as one of Jane Eyre's favorite books, and is mentioned frequently throughout Brontė's novel. "With Bewick on my knee, I was then happy: happy at least in my way. I feared nothing but interruption, and that came too soon." - Jane Eyre. Jane and Rochester use avian pet names for each other, such as "skylark," seen here on page 194.

The first volume of this work was published in 1797 for which Beilby furnished the written descriptions with Bewick providing the text of the second volume. Gordon N. Ray [ILLUSTRATOR AND THE BOOK IN ENGLAND, ETC.] "Bewick's use of end-grained blocks was widely imitated both in England and the Continent. Among his apprentices were some of the most distinguished engravers of the first half of the 19th century. When later artists like Gordon Craig and William Nicholson revived the tradition of creative work on wood, they turned to Bewick's example in freeing themselves from the trammels of reproductive engraving."
