First Edition. Octavo. xvii, 568 pages, many textual illustrations, folding map. errata slip bound in. The author became the collector of customs and internal revenue for the North West Territories in 1869 and becoming the special commissioner for the settlement of crofter fishermen on Vancouver Island. After completing this work, he founded the Mining Record. The large map is especially nice. Bound in 3/4 blue-green morocco over marbled paper covered boards with matching endpapers, raised bands, compartments decorated in gilt, fading to spine and lettering, nice owner's bookplate, two bumped corners, some light rubbing. A very good copy.

The author was a journalist, civil servant and emigration commissioner who persuaded many Scots to settle in Canada, was also a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and helped to define border between Canada and Alaska. The map, of the Canadian Pacific Railroad through all of Canada, is quite fragile and has splits, some repaired, along several folds. It has no loss except for 2 small holes at the bottom. A remark in the Introduction captures the narrative s point of view, Of the pre-historic period, that is, prior to the arrival of Captain James Cook, on the north-west coast of America, little need be said. So, a history of Europeans, British Europeans, in the Northwest emphasizing commercial and social development, loyalty to the Queen Empress, and the like. Paper becoming brittle with a tendency to chip, absent the map mentioned in the Preface (but no sign it was ever present and had subsequently been removed). A Very Good copy.
