Seller: East Kent Academic, Bridge, Canterbury, KENT, United Kingdom
Hardcover. Condition: Good. First published 1830. Amazing to think that Sir Walter Scott named his novel after my favourite Edinburgh football team!! This is a rarer edition published by Richard Edward King, London (in maroon binding, of course!) n.d., about 1890? 566 pages. The story of a working-class girl's journey (Jeanie Deans, after whom the LNER paddle steamer, built in 1931, was named) from Edinburgh to London, against the backdrop of the Porteous Riots in 1736-7 to seek a royal pardon for her sister, convicted of infanticide. Some tanning on inside covers. The Heart of Midlothian was the Old Tolbooth Prison in the Royal Mile (now marked by a heart on the cobbles), reputed to be the 'heart' of the county of Midlothian.
