Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The Harp in the South Trilogy follows the trials and tribulations of the Darcy family over thirty years, from country New South Wales in the 1920s to the inner-city slums of Surry Hills in the 1950s.The beating heart of this exuberant play is its carousel of characters. From hard-boozing Hugh Darcy and his long-suffering 'Missus' Margaret, to their children, sensitive and romantic Roie, smart and sassy Dolour, and poor little Thady who ran out onto the overcrowded road and has been trying to find his way home ever since. Along the way there's the Chinese greengrocer Lick Jimmy, who tempts Dolour with his 'poor man's oranges', no-nonsense brothel madam Delie Stock, who tempts everyone with her girls, and handsome young Charlie Rothe, who tempts Roie with the promise of a better life.Kate Mulvany brings her trademark humour and tenderness to bear on Ruth Park's much-loved novels in this epic adaptation. Join the Darcy family as they journey through laughter and tragedy, booze and blood, poverty and cruelty, but most of all love. Book First Edition
Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Covering a span of over thirty years in the life of the Darcy family, these three iconic novels from Ruth Park take us from first love to hardship via outback Australia and the streets of Surry Hills. In "Missus", we read about the adolescence and courtship of Hughie Darcy and the innocent Margaret in the dirt and dust of rural Australia. We next meet the pair in "The Harp in the South", where they run a flea-bitten boarding house in Surry Hills with their two daughters, Roie and Dolour. Making ends meet is hard in the slums of Sydney, and love is not kind to Roie as she takes her first steps into adulthood. Lastly we watch Dolour grow up all too fast in "Poor Man's Orange", as Hughie and Margaret struggle to keep their relationship alive after so many years together. At times confronting, often affectionate, this is a remarkable portrait of an Australian working-class family of the time. The gritty realism of family life lived in the poverty-stricken slum of inner Sydney's Surry Hills during the 1940s. Also includes Missus and Poor man's orange. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Covers have a few marks and a crease to opening bottom corner. Light tanning to spine. Binding strong and square. 285pp. Light tanning to edges of pge block and small stain on top edge. Contents clean and bright. Rosina Ruth Lucia Park AM (24 August 1917 14 December 2010) was a New Zealand born Australian author. Her best known works are the novels The Harp in the South (1948) and Playing Beatie Bow (1980), and the children's radio serial The Muddle-Headed Wombat (1951 1970), which also spawned a book series (1962 1982). The Harp in the South was Park s debut novel. Published in 1948, it portrays the life of a Catholic Irish Australian family living in the Sydney suburb of Surry Hills, which was at that time an inner city slum. It was published, initially, in the Sydney Morning Herald in twelve daily instalments, beginning on 4 January 1947, after winning a competition run by that newspaper. Paperback (scruffy), grubby cover; all our specials have minimal description to keep listing them viable. They are at least reading copies, complete and in reasonable condition, but usually secondhand; frequently they are superior examples. Ordering more than one book will reduce your overall postage cost.
