War Graves On Both Sides, A Rather Depressing Site , Thurs 8th April 1943, Passed German Airfield With 2 Dozen Damaged Planes And German Ammo Dump. By Easter Sgt Penn And His Battery Were At Enfidaville , Tunisia Facing The German And Italians, The Diary Continues-- Thurs 29th April , His Been A Bad Day For Us, Jerry Started Shelling The Track On The Other Side Of The Dunes, George Beck Was Blown To Bits, He Was The Only Decent S.M. In The Battery!! I Was About 50 Yards Away , Well In A Hole In The Sand , "F"Troop Had A Shell In Their Pit, Blew Up Some Ammo But Didn't Damage Gun. Sun 2nd May - We Have Sent Over A Few Rounds During The Morning . Jerry Has Been Shelling Us . Mortar Fire. In Front Of Us Is A Fascist Youth Division And A Div Of German Grenadiers. Tuesday 4th May, Jerry Keeps Sending Stuff Over Into The Woods Behind Us Where The Mediums Are, But They Are Still Firing Back. Lots Of Hot Stuff Dropped Near Us Again HQ Waggon Hit. Saturday 8th May 1943- Fired Over 300 Rds Today The Infantry Attacked And Gained The Hill, What A Noise. Tuesday 11th May, At About 09.00Hrs An Italian And German Officer Were Observed Holding A White Flag Thursday 13th May -All Resistance Ended. Friday 14th May 150,000 Men, 250 Tanks, 30,000 Vehicles, 1000 Guns Food Clothing Captured!!! The 56th( London) Division Were Then Rested For The Invasion Of Sicily The Action Starts Again In September 1943. September 3rd 1943 Embarked On LST 428 for Salerno Bay , Italy Signed Unconditional Surrender. September 9th Lots, Of Prisoners On Beach Where We Landed, Sept 10th ,Captured Faiano, Germans Still In Tobacco Factory Sept 16th , Have Been Firing All Day It's Good To See So Many Of Our Own Planes , Sept 30th About 10 Miles Fron Versuvius, Found German 3 inch Mortar In Good Condition But No Ammo, Huge Number Of "Booby"Traps In This Position On The 19th October 1943 Sgt Penn Was Wounded When A Shell Burst Close To The Gun. He Was Evacuated Home. Many Other Entries Throughout This Action Packed Diary Giving A Graphic Account Of The The War In North Africa And The Beginning Of The Mainland Italian Campaign.
