Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. The complete seven volume set of Proust's classic in Modern Library hardcovers with dust jacket. Six of the books are fine or near fine, but The Captive has some dampstaining to the rear panel of the jacket and rear board of the book. Rear endpapers are adhered to each other at the bottom edge. Green color of rear board is lightened from dampstain, and the rear panel of the jacket is a little rippled. All seven jackets are price clipped, and all have a number written on the front flap in ink corresponding to their order in the series, A couple of the jackets have small chips at spines. Based on Toledano's numbering and detail on spines and dust jackets, these all appear to have been published from the late 1950's to the mid 1960's. There is no writing in or on the books, and all could be unread as the pages are all tight and bright.

This early 20th-century work is his most prominent, known both for its length and its theme of involuntary memory. The most famous example of this is the "episode of the madeleine", which occurs early in the first volume. The novel gained fame in English translation by C. K. Scott Moncrieff as "Remembrance of Things Past", but the title "In Search of Lost Time", a literal rendering of the French, became ascendant after D. J. Enright adopted it for his revised translation published in 1992. "In Search of Lost Time" follows the narrator's recollections of childhood and experiences into adulthood in the late 19th-century and early 20th-century high-society France, while reflecting on the loss of time and lack of meaning in the world. The novel began to take shape in 1909. Proust continued to work on it until his final illness in the autumn of 1922 forced him to break off. Proust established the structure early on, but even after volumes were initially finished, he continued to add new material and edited one volume after another for publication. The last three of the seven volumes contain oversights and fragmentary or unpolished passages, as they existed only in draft form at the death of the author; the publication of these parts was overseen by his brother Robert.' (Wiki) ***Marcel Proust was best known for this 3200 page masterpiece, originally published as "A La Recherche du Temps Perdu", and first translated into English by C.K. Scott Moncrieff as "Remembrance of Things Past" - later revised in translation to "In Search of Lost Time". Semi-autobiographical, and written in a stream-of-consciousness style, W. Somerset Maugham called it "the greatest fiction to date". ***A complete set of the first edition in English of "Cities of the Plain", published in eleven volumes - all first impressions apart from "Cities of the Plain". With the additional resource volume "A Guide to Proust" in the dustwrapper. It is now extremely difficult to find a complete set of this important work. A beautiful set for the collector of the work of Marcel Proust and literary first editions. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

First Edition
First editions in English, first impressions, of Proust's complete roman a fleuve, a truly rare set with all copies in dust jacket (saving Cities of the Plain which was not issued in jacket but only in slipcase, here also present). This set was assembled by Sir Geoffrey Keynes, with his ownership inscriptions in several volumes. Complete sets in first impressions are scarce, but dust jackets, especially for the early volumes, are truly rare. Proust's À la recherche du temps perdu was first published in France from 1913 and 1927. It is universally acclaimed as among the most influential works of modern fiction. Proust read and appreciated Scott-Moncrieff's translation, writing to him on 10 October 1922, after the release of Swann's Way, to compliment his "fine talent". Moncrieff's translation was published episodically: Swann's Way (2 vols., 1922), Within a Budding Grove (2 vols., 1924), The Guermantes Way (2 vols., 1925), Cities of the Plain (2 vols., 1929), The Captive (1929), and The Sweet Cheat Gone (1930). The final volume of the sequence, Time Regained (1931), was translated by Scott Moncrieff's friend Sydney Schiff after his death, under the pseudonym Stephen Hudson. The publisher Alfred A. Knopf, attempting to break into the English market, published Cities of the Plain, The Captive and The Sweet Cheat Gone under his own London imprint (though uniform with the Chatto & Windus volumes). The final volume, Time Regained, was published by Chatto and Windus. The first Knopf title, The Cities of the Plain, was limited to 2,230 copies and issued in a slipcase (here number 973). The final Chatto and Windus title, Time Regained, was limited to 1,300 copies (here number 497). Sir Geoffrey Langdon Keynes (1887-1982) was an author, bibliographer, surgeon and brother of the economist John Maynard Keynes. Knighted, in 1955, for services to medicine he was influential in breast cancer surgery and also blood transfusion. He published widely on William Blake, but also wrote bibliographies of Siegfried Sassoon, John Donne and Jane Austen. Eleven volumes, octavo. Original blue cloth, spines lettered in gilt, with dust jackets to works 1-3 and 4-7, and slipcase to work 4. Generally very good condition, with a few small chips or nicks to jacket extremities and mild toning to spine panels, crude tape repairs to versos generally, larger chip with some loss at foot of Time Regained, and at head of The Sweet Cheat Gone, both Within a Budding Grove volumes rather worse for wear with loss along joints, Swann's Way vol. 2 very presentable though with smaller chips and loss and tape repair to verso, Swann's Way vol. 1 much restored with residual tape marks, lower half of spine panel, lower half of rear panel, and the rear flap, restored in facsimile. Even with these faults, still an exceptional set given the rarity of the jackets.

Seller: Jonkers Rare Books, Henley on Thames, OXON, United Kingdom
Seven works in eleven volumes, all first English language editions. Each volume in original blue cloth lettered in gilt, in original cream printed dustwrappers, apart from Cities of the Plain which is in its original slipcase, having not been issued in dustwrappers. Cities of the Plain is number 1943 of 2230 sets. Time Regained is one of 100 not for sale copies (from a total edition of 1350) and is inscribed at length by the books' translator, Sidney Schiff, to the noted French literary critic Ramon Fernandez. A fine set in very good to near fine dustwrappers, spines slightly tanned with light wear or the occasional small chip to the spine ends or corners, but all entirely unrestored. A truly exceptional set and very rare in such a complete state. A superb set of the English translation of Proust's magnum opus, A La Recherche du Temps Perdu, widely regarded as the twentieth century's most influential, even definitive, novel. It was written as and is contrived to be read as a single novel, yet is made up of seven self-contained works. Proust began working in earnest on the work in 1909 completing most of it in outline before the publication of the first instalment in 1913. By the time of his death from pneumonia in 1922, he had fully completed all but a few passages of the work and the episodes continued appearing, to ever greater acclaim, until their conclusion in 1927. The novel's fame and influence in England is mainly due to the translation made by Charles Scott Moncrieff, the first volume being issued a few months before Proust's death in 1922 and continuing until Moncrieff's own death in 1930, by which time he was part way through translating the final volume, which was completed by Syndey Schiff under the pseudonym, Stephen Hudson. Moncrieff's choice of series title, rather than the more literal "In Search of Lost Time" which the novel is now often referred to as, was taken from the second line of Shakespeare's Sonnet no. 30. The work's influence on modernism and the development of the novel is hard to overstate: many techniques which were to become a staple of the twentieth century, such as the extensive use of the interior monologue or the stream of consciousness style have their origins in this work. Between approximately 1000 and 2500 copies of each of the volumes of the translation were issued, making complete sets uncommon and almost inevitably found without dustwrappers. Sets in dustwrappers, particularly unrestored and so well preserved are very rare indeed.
