Viene considerato dalla Crime Writers' Association il secondo miglior romanzo giallo di tutti i tempi. Si tratta del romanzo hardboiled per antonomasia. Il libro è il primo della serie in cui indaga il detective privato Philip Marlowe. Il titolo è riferito alla morte ed è la frase finale dell'opera. L'investigatore privato Philip Marlowe viene chiamato presso la villa di un generale paraplegico in pensione, Sternwood, la cui ricchezza proviene da alcuni pozzi petroliferi nei dintorni di Los Angeles ormai esauriti. Il generale gli richiede di condurre delle indagini a proposito di un biglietto ricattatorio inviatogli da Arthur Gwynn Geiger, titolare di una libreria antiquaria: nel biglietto si fa riferimento a una cambiale consegnata a Geiger da Carmen, la figlia minore di Sternwood; parlando col generale il detective apprende anche che Terence "Rusty" Regan, marito della figlia maggiore Vivian, è scomparso da circa un mese senza lasciare traccia. Marlowe accetta l'incarico e prima di lasciare la villa incontra anche l'affascinante Vivian, curiosa di conoscere il reale motivo della visita di Marlowe a suo padre. Il detective inizia le indagini sulla libreria scoprendo subito che si tratta solo di un'attività di facciata che copre in realtà un traffico di materiale pornografico. Marlowe segue Geiger e si apposta all'esterno della casa; dopo un po' l'uomo riceve una donna e più tardi si sentono dei colpi di pistola e delle urla: il detective fa irruzione e trova Carmen Sternwood, nuda e visibilmente sotto l'effetto di droga e Geiger morto accanto a una macchina fotografica nascosta dentro un totem. Nei giorni seguenti avvengono altri delitti: viene trovato morto dentro un'automobile finita in mare l'autista degli Sternwood e anche l'ex partner di Carmen, Joe Brody, in combutta con Geiger, viene ucciso in casa. L'idea che si fa strada nella mente di Marlowe è che la catena di omicidi sia legata in qualche modo alla scomparsa di Rusty e ai traffici illegali di Eddie Mars, il proprietario del casinò dove Vivian sperpera il denaro di famiglia.
