Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Jacket illustrations by Russell Farrell (illustrator). 1st Edition. Two of Jonathan Gash's 24 Lovejoy Mysteries -- the 18th and the 20th -- combined into a single lot to consolidate shipping charge. Both are as-new, unread hardcover first editions with boards that resist opening past 50 degrees; both state "First American Edition" with complete number lines 1 3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2 -- first printings. We list the ISBN for "The Rich and the Profane" (1999); the ISBN of "The Grace in Older Women" (1995) is 0-670-86128-6. Lovejoy is a rural (East Anglia) English antiques dealer and minor con man whose semi-mystical ability to recognize a real antique in a heap of rubbish somehow never gets him far enough ahead to keep the electric bill paid, despite which he always finds himself having to beat off the ladies with a stick. The 71-episode British TV series (1986-1994), adapted for the screen by Ian La Frenais, starred Ian McShane as a largely-neutered-for-the-home-screen Lovejoy, Phyllis Logan, Dudley Sutton as a cleaned-up version of the resolutely drunken barker Tinker Dill, Chris Jury, and (in the final seasons) Caroline Langrishe. 279 and 344 pp., respectively. Price for the pair now reduced from $22.

Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. Cover illustrations by Kim Barnes, Russell Farrell, and (for "A Rag, a Bone, and a Hank of Hair") by Mark Burckhardt (illustrator). Penguin mass-market paperback reprints of the 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th Lovejoy mysteries. "The Sin Within Her Smile" and "The Grace in Older Women" grade as-new unread; "The Possessions of a Lady" grades near-fine with three stress creases (each about the size of a thumbnail) to the front wrap, and "A Rag, a Bone, and a Hank of Hair" grades very-good with a reading crease to spine. All four -- The Sin Within Her Smile (1995), The Grace in Older Women (1996), The Possessions of a Lady (1997) and A Rag, A Bone, and a Hank of Hair (2001) are first-thus, mass-market paperback printings with complete number lines. We list the ISBN of The Sin Within Her Smile; the ISBN of The Grace in Older Women is 0-14-024662-2; the ISBN of The Possessions of a Lady is 0-14-025792-6; the ISBN of A Rag, A Bone, and a Hank of Hair is 0-14-029857-6. The (British) television series starring Ian McShane on the Arts & Entertainment network is advertised to rear wrap of "The Sin Within Her Smile," only. Price for the group of four mass-market paperbacks, now reduced from $23.

Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Jacket illustrations by Russell Farrell (illustrator). 1st Edition. Viking hardcover American first printings of the 18th, 19th, and 20th Lovejoy mysteries, 1995, 1996, and 1999, all as-new unread (though "Rich and the Profane" shows a black ink squiggle to bottom page edges which may be a remainder mark), with fine original dust jackets. ISBNs, respectively, are 0-670-86128-6, 0-670-86935-3, and0-670-88346-8. Lovejoy the antiques dealer has an almost extrasensory ability to identify genuine antiques, though for some reason it never prevents his being perpetually broke. Meantime, for some reason, the plod always seem to suspect him of being involved in the latest East Anglia crime wave. Ian La Frenais & Co. turned the books into a moderately long-running BBC TV series (1990-1994) starring Ian McShane, Dudley Sutton, Chris Jury & Phyllis Logan. Though for some reason runner Tinker Dill (Dudley Sutton) was considerably scrubbed up, while Gash's hero -- who in the books is not terribly successful at beating off the ladies with a stick -- was rendered virtually celibate for the home screen, leaving Caroline Langrishe (among others) to go largely to waste. Three hardcover mysteries combined into one lot to consolidate shipping charge, now reduced from $24.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. First Paperback Printings. 328, 322 pp. Both books have light rubbing on the corners with flat uncreased spines; no interior markings. In The Grace in Older Women, making love with a lady in a forest is one way Lovejoy can get close to her set of Bilston enamels, but ownership is a different matter. Worse, his contacts are also having a hard time of it, for the village of Fenstone is becoming deserted, and his forger friend is in jail. And in The Possessions of a Lady, Lovejoy is wanted by the local constabulary, and a fellow dealer is beating him to the punch on every priceless antique. Lovejoy has to find Tinker's cousin's girl who is missing, and expose insider trading at an auction. Created by Ian La Frenais, Lovejoy was a British television series that ran from 1986 to 1994, starring Ian McShane, Dudley Sutton, Chris Jury, Phyllis Logan, Malcolm Tierney, Caroline Langrishe, Diane Parish, and a host of others, including Joanna Lumley for three episodes.
