ABOUT THE AUTHOR: John Everared, (1584? to 1641) was an English preacher and author. He was also a Familist, hermetic thinker, Neoplatonist, and alchemist. He is known for his translations of mystical and hermetic literature. He was brought before the Court of High Commission in 1636, when he was vicar of Fairstead, Essex, and charged with various heresies: Familism, Antinomianism, Anabaptism. He was fined heavily. On a second occasion, in 1640, he recanted his spiritualist beliefs. His sermons, published posthumously, are between Martin Marprelate and Richard Overton in style. In the preface by Rapha Harford to Some Gospel-treasures Opened, the publisher places Evarard centrally on two axes, rationalist-formalist and Familist-Ranter. (Wikipedia). CONDITION: Overall VG. Cover shows wear as to be expected at over 250 years old. Inner hinges have been reinforced with a cream color publisher's cloth. Title page has been repaired, yet has a 2.5" x 3" piece missing at the bottom corner, removing some text; and 3" x 0.75" piece missing at the top corner, which does not impede on text. Delightful marginalia in dipped ink from the period, (dated 1797 and others dated 1813 and 1818), are present on the front and back pastedowns and occasionally throughout. An image of a lady in glamorous period dress is drawn on the back pastedown, presumed by a little girl named "Sarah", whose name is also present near the drawing. Pagination is complete, except for half the last page is missing from the second part. A wonderful copy. Full refund if not satisfied.
