Hard Cover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. Arthur J. Gaskin (illustrator). Reprint. Later printing of this finely-illustrated carol, written by Neale in 1853, adapting his earlier prose version of the Wenceslas legend to fit the tune of a medieval Catholic hymn. Brief introduction by William Morris, six illustrated pages printed on one side only. Hardcover, rebacked in black cloth, black leather corners over blue paper-covered boards. Covers rubbed & stained, edges dented & chipped; pages tanned & lightly chipped with a few short tears, gutter gaps; bookseller's label (Peabody Book Shop, Baltimore) inside front cover. Text clean, images unharmed; three blank leaves, half-title, blank, title page in ornamental script, blank, dedication page, blank, blank, copyright note, introduction, blank, blank, [2], blank, blank, [2], blank, blank, [2], blank, 2 blank leaves. Size: 7¾" by 10½".
First Edition. First Edition. Original publisher' blue-gray paper covered boards with cover illustration and lettering in black. One of only 125 copies printed. Five full-page illustrations, and one fully decorated border design surrounding a poem, with header illustration, all by Arthur Gaskin, noted 1890's illustrator, painter and and designer, and member of the Birmingham Group of artists. Gaskin produced woodcut illustrations for William Morris' Kelmscott press, the latter supplying a full-page introduction to this work, saying ".I cannot help saying [the pictures] have given me very much pleasure, both as achievements in themselves and as giving hopes of a turn towards the ornamental side of illustration, which is most desirable." A very good copy, often seen much worse, with slight paper loss to spine, slight cover soiling, near fine internally, hinges in tact, very clean. Quite scarce.

Published within a collection of Carols in 1925 by the firm of Alexander Moring. The printed volume presented 14 carols with 6 double-page colour plates and 5 other colour plates by Brickdale. This fine watercolour was reproduced as one of the double-page plates. Eleanor Fortescue Brickdale (1871-1945) is remembered as a painter and designer. As noted by Simon Houfe, "she represents the last phase of Pre-Raphaelitism, her highly detailed and meaningful little pictures are crammed with medievalism and moral sentiment. She was the ideal illustrator of legend and particularly for those expensive coloured gift books of the 1900s where her bright colours and haughty figures were set off to advantage on the ample pages" (Houfe, p. 73). Simon Houfe, 19th Century British Book Illustrators and Caricaturists, 1998. Original drawing (235 x 316 mm) on artist's board (252 x 335 mm with "Smith's Water Color Boards" printed on reverse), fine ink and watercolour, signed ("E. F. Brickdale") lower right, mounted, framed, and glazed (framed size 387 x 456 mm). Fine condition: bright and unfaded.
