First edition, first impression, presentation copy from another prime minister's wife, Mary Wilson, to Marcia Falkender, the secretary and key political aide of Harold Wilson, inscribed on the title page "To Marcia from Mary (Wilson) with love". The book, co-written by then-prime minister Tony Blair's wife Cherie, traces the experience of the various Number 10 spouses from Clarissa Eden onwards. At the time of publication, most of the spouses were alive and were interviewed for the book, including Mary Wilson herself. Marcia Falkender was also interviewed. From the 1960s onwards, there were persistent rumours that Harold Wilson and Marcia were having an affair. The book notes the upset this caused between the two Wilsons and Marcia, as well as how they decided to refrain from engaging with the issue in public. It comments at some length at the relationship between Mary Wilson and Marcia, how Marcia aided Mary with navigating the political world, and quotes Marcia as saying Mary is her "oldest friend" (pp. 135-6). The book was acquired by Peter Harrington from Marcia Falkender's son. Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, red endpapers. With dust jacket. Light bumping at extremities of book and jacket, latter a little soiled and price-clipped; a very good copy in like jacket.
