Perfect bound in wrappers. Berrigan's selected poems, this copy inscribed to poet and publisher Ed Foster, of Talisman House. Foster was a close associate of Berrigan's, and the two had discussed the founding of Talisman together prior to Berrigan's passing. Very good minus, due to shelfwear on covers including some chips, stains, and creases. Text block is clean and bright. An important association.
Paperback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. First edition, the simultaneous edition in bound wrappers (large trade paperback size format) of this uncommon poetry book. Very good condition, tight and sound. A special copy in that this has been INSCRIBED by Berrigan in year of publication "and stopping here in Southampton, all the best, Ted Berrigan, 24 July 80." Red cloth over boards, 403 pp., illustrated by George Schneeman. Beautifully inscribed by Ted Berrigan to poet Jack Collom, "For Jack from Ted / My 46th Birthday / Your 49th Birthday / 8 Nov. - 15 Nov. 1980 / Glad to share this city / with you, or any other - /Love / Ted Berrigan / NYC 101 St. Mark's Pl." First Edition. Wrappered Issue. Octavo (22.75cm); pictorial card wrappers; xvii,403,[5]pp; illus. Eileen Myles's copy, inscribed to her by Berrigan across the half-title page: "For Eileen, with pleasure / only to find you too late! (but not too late, thank god!) / love, + real admiration for you, Ted (Berrigan) / 28 Sept 81 / NYC." Light wear to extremities, faint vertical crease at mid-spine, with some faint creasing and tiny stains to rear wrapper, and a few tiny stains to right edge of textblock; Very Good+. Late but substantial collection of poems by Berrigan, gathering work spanning three decades, including some rare, early work, as well as previously ubpublished material. A superb copy, inscribed by Berrigan to Eileen Myles; at the time, Myles was at the beginning of her career, and Berrigan was less than three years away from an untimely death due to cirrhosis of the liver. Myles had moved to New York from Boston in 1974, then in her mid-20's and not yet out as a lesbian, when she encountered the Poetry Project at St. Mark's, where she was taught by Berrigan and Alice Notley. By 1980 she had published her first two books - The Irony of the Leash and Polar Odes - and seen many of her poems included in various little magazines. A terrific association copy, connecting two generations of New York School poets. Fischer, p.55.
