Book First Edition Signed
First U.S. edition. 230 pages. From the library of David Lodge, author's retained copy, signed by him in black ink to the front endpaper. The book is reasonably firmly bound in slightly bumped, marked and rubbed brown cloth, lettered in black to the spine. The text block is slightly toned, marked and dusty. The dust jacket, which re-works the Kenneth Burrows design for the U.K. first edition of three years previously, is the original and not price clipped, it is toned, grubby, marked, rubbed and faded, with small chips and short closed tears to the edges and a longer tear at the lower front spine fold, some of these repaired with small pieces of thin paper archival tape to the reverse. The novel was published in America during Lodge's year-long fellowship at a U.S. college, and in his memoirs he describes an experience promoting the book on a radio phone-in programme: "to answer questions about the British Army from people in the Bay Area who had nothing better to do." [QAGTTBB, page 386]. The venture was not a commercial success and consequently the U.S. first edition is rarer than its U.K. counterpart.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A First UK Printing published by MacGibbon and Kee in 1962. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. Rough cut pages.Very minor bumping of the rear corners. Hint of pushing at the spine tips. The black titling remains bright. Some dustiness to the text block with a little light spotting to the page edges in places. The fragile thin paper WRAPPER is price-clipped and is in VERY GOOD++ condition. Some minor edge wear and creasing to the spine ends. Minor soiling to the rear panel and the spine ends. No loss of colouring to the spine. The Kenneth Burrows designed wrapper artwork looks very attractive in the removable Brodart archival protector. The book has been SIGNED by DAVID LODGE to the title page and a ticket for the signing event accompanies this title as provenance. This copy belonged to Bernard Bergonzi and bears his name to the front blank endpaper. Bergonzi is a British literary scholar, critic and poet. He is Emeritus Professor of English at the University of Warwick and is an expert on T.S.Eliot. He has published work on David Lodge. The book bears Bergonzi's pencilled comments to the rear pastedown and a few simple pencilled lines in the text in a few places. The Author's second novel and scarce to find SIGNED. Collectible.
