George Herbert Leigh Mallory was an English mountaineer who took part in the first three British expeditions to Mount Everest in the early 1920s. In the 1924 expedition Mallory and his climbing partner disappeared near the summit. His body was only found in 1999 and the debate continues as to whether he was the first to climb Everest.
