Allerdings waren die Voraussetzungen für Mutter und Kind keinesfalls mit der heutigen Situation vergleichbar, denn die fehlenden medizinischen und hygienischen Kenntnisse der damaligen Zeit begünstigten eine hohe Sterblichkeitsrate ¿ vor, während und nach der Geburt, und das quer durch alle Gesellschaftsschichten. Doch weshalb setzten sich römische Frauen trotz alledem mehrfach und immer wieder den tödlichen Gefahren einer Geburt aus Hatten sie überhaupt eine Wahl und welche Rolle spielten sie dabei Um auf diese Fragen Antworten zu finden, wird in dieser Arbeit zunächst ein Ansatz aus verschiedenen Perspektiven gewählt, um auf der Grundlage von verschiedenen Quellen, einen groben Überblick über die damaligen medizinischen Kenntnisse und Vorstellungen, die soziale Stellung der Frau in Gesellschaft und Familie und über die rechtlichen Voraussetzungen in der damaligen Zeit zu geben. Darauf aufbauend wird dann konkret auf das Ereignis einer Geburt eingegangen. Dazu werden an dieser Stelle auch religiöse Aspekte mitbetrachtet und in die Schilderung miteinbezogen. Anschließend wird dann noch erörtert, mit welchen Konsequenzen sich römische Frauen (und Männer) konfrontiert sahen, wenn eine Ehe kinderlos blieb und welche Möglichkeiten es gab, sich ungewollter Schwangerschaften und Kinder zu entledigen. Grundsätzlich soll in dieser Arbeit der Fokus vorwiegend auf der Rolle der Frau liegen, wobei es sich in einer männlich dominierten Gesellschaft, wie es in der römischen Antike der Fall war, nicht vermeiden lässt, immer wieder auch auf den Einfluss und den Wirkungsbereich der Männer einzugehen.Denn wenn man sich mit Frauenbildern in der römischen Antike beschäftigt, so lässt sich feststellen, dass es zwar eine Vielzahl von Quellen und Darstellungen darüber gibt, wie Frauen damals gelebt haben. Dass es sich dabei aber fast ausschließlich nur, um eine männliche Perspektive handelt, die sich weitestgehend auf das Idealbild von römischen Frauen und ihre Lebensweise bezieht, lässt sich mit einer sehr einseitigen, männerdominierten Quellenlage begründen. 28 pp. Deutsch.
