The 3 books in this volume are bound in a vintage leather which is rather worn and stained; with a leather spine with 5 raised bands and no lettering. The hinges have been re-glued. The quality linen rag paper is clean and white; all plates and fold-outs are present. The frontispiece is a bit faded; and there is a blurry name written in ink (H.Hooke) at the top of the title page. With a page of handwritten annotations on planting from the previous owner following the last page of ads. A charming and elegant look at gardening from the perspective of a clergyman. "The first original eighteenth-century English treatise on gardening did not appear until the London bookseller Barnaby Bernard Lintot, or Lintott, published in 1714 The Clergy-Man's Recreation by John Laurence" (Henrey II, pp. 415). Not only was The Clergy-Man's Recreation Laurence's first published treatise on gardening, it also "possesses a historic interest because it contains one of the earliest published records of the transmission of a virus by grafting" (Henrey, p. 416, 417). Henrey II, p. 415; Hunt and Willis, editors. The Genius of Place: The English Landscape Garden, 1620-1820. Fifth and Second editions, respectively. The "first original eighteenth century English treatise on gardening" [Henrey, p. 415], together with its companion, The Gentleman's Recreation. In 1718, following the printing of this volume, a third work was added, The Fruit-garden Kalendar (first edition). in order to make his "two former treatises of gardening compleat, and if possible more intelligible.".
