Born in Dublin, the Anglo-Irish novelist James Hanley (1897-1985) received critical aclaim from the likes of T.E. Lawrence, E.M. Forster, William Faulkner, and Anthony Burgess. He was prolific, but not particularly successful financially. His novel "Boy," (1931) was suppressed in England but published without incident in the USA. This is a Near Fine copy of the First American Edition of what would become a four-volume series of autobiographical novels. Bright red cloth binding with gilt titling on the spine. Clean text; 549 pages. Some staining to the front free endpaper, which also has two small letters by a previous owner. Else, a Fine copy. The dustjacket is Very Good Plus. It is unclipped and showing only a tiny bit of edgewear. There has been tape repair to the reverse, which is not really apparent from the front; in an archival plastic protector. First American Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Very Good Plus. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
