[Excerpt from Introduction]Francis William Edmonds (1806-1863), though by profession a banker, was also an artist of considerable talent. We know from his contemporaries that he was a man of great personal charm, who played an important part in the cultural life of New York City.Although his artistic achievements were widely recognized during his lifetime, there were many who disapproved of his avocation and who thought that he should have been contentto be successful in one profession only. Henry T. Tuckerman, a contemporary writer on art, was the author of two books, both of which include accounts of Edmonds. Tuckerman wrote that Edmonds "always found peculiar satisfaction in the society of artists.".
