A few pages with stains, many with finger smudges in the margins. Julius Henri Browne (1833-1902), b. Seneca Falls, New York; d. New York City. A graduate of Saint Xavier College (Cincinnati), Browne became a war correspondent for the New York Tribune at the outbreak of the American Civil War. He was wounded at Fort Donelson, and taken prisoner while trying to run the Vicksburg batteries. He was imprisoned for 20 months in seven different prisons, finally escaping at Salisbury with fellow journalist Albert Dean Richardson. They traveled 400 miles to reach the Union lines. After the war he wrote he continued to write for the Tribune, and well as the New York Times and several other leading periodicals. His Four Years in Secessia has vivid descriptions of war scenes and of the conditions of Southern prisons and their Northern prisoners.
